Marriott to open Tadao Ando-designed W hotel in Osaka in 2021

12 Jan 2018
Marriott International has secured a deal to open and manage a 337-room luxury hotel in Japan’s second-largest city, Osaka.

Designed by architect Tadao Ando, the 27-floor property will be operated by Marriott’s subsidiary W Hotels Worldwide.

Scheduled to open in 2021, the property is owned by real estate giant and house builder Sekisui House and will be the first-ever W-branded hotel in Japan.

Facilities include a large Away Spa and a health club, Fit.

Details of the spa are yet to be confirmed but treatments will follow the Away recipe for rejuvenating body journeys, facials and beauty therapies.

According to Anthony Ingham, W Hotels’ global brand leader, the opening of W Osaka will look to benefit from a predicted increase in interest in Japan as a tourism destination following the 2020 Olympic Games.

“In 2020, Japan will capture the global spotlight, welcoming nations from around the world to the country on a grand scale for the 2020 Games,” Ingham said.

“This is a great build-up to the launch of the first W in Japan.”

W Osaka will join the 50-strong portfolio of W Hotels around the world.

Last year, Marriott launched four new W hotels – W Shanghai The Bund, W Suzhou, W Bellevue and W Goa – and is preparing three other launches: W Panama, W Amman and W Brisbane.

Marriott plans to have 75 W Hotels in operation by the end of 2020.
